For those that may not know, I am originally from Arizona. I was born in Tucson and spent my youth living in various spots in Southern Arizona including Douglas and Huachuca City. I graduated high school in Tombstone, yeah that Tombstone, right across the street from the Bird Cage Theatre and a couple of blocks from the OK Corral.
I got a few days to myself, visited my folks and enjoyed riding some of my favorite routes and tripping down memory lane on the quiet and secluded roads of Cochise County. I was then fortunate to be able to bring Dwayne Farr, Stefan Zavislan and Jay ShalekBriski from the US Military Endurance Sports (USMES) Elite Cycling Team for a few days of training and team building prior to transitioning into a larger club camp. It was cool to share some of my favorite routes with good company.
After that we said farewell to Stefan who had to head back to work and classes, and Jay, Dwayne and I transitioned into the full USMES club camp. The club camp was really 3 camps, a triathlon camp, cycling camp and para cycling or adaptive athlete camp supporting close to 70 athletes. The cycling camp was split into several groups by ability level and distance, and I had the privilege of leading the “A” group for the 6 day camp. We hit all the Tucson monuments including Madera Canyon, Kitt Peak, Gate’s Pass and of course Mt Lemmon. The weather was of course amazing, and we had a fantastic group, everyone was courteous to their fellow riders and patient within the group when the inevitable flat tire hit. A good time was had by all. Check out the pics below for highlights of the trip and thanks for reading.
